San Bernardino County is physically the largest county in the contiguous United States. It is larger than 15 states geographically and 16 states by population. San Bernardino County was founded by a bill introduced by Assembly Member Jefferson Hunt. The County was officially created on April 26, 1853, from parts of Los Angeles, San Diego, and Mariposa County. The original geographical size included a significant portion of present-day Riverside County until 1893.
